The nuclear power plant’s ‘maintenance book’ has been compiled on the basis of rules drawn from experience and an analysis of potential incidents. Modes of failure and their potential safety implications have been defined for each component that is safety relevant. Maintenance is subject to stringent rules. After every maintenance job, a detailed check is carried out. EPZ has stocks of all key components on site.
Inspections are performed in accordance with strict rules.
During maintenance, there is a particular focus on:
1. the steam generators
2. the reactor vessel
3. the emergency diesel power plants
4. key components
All systems are functionally tested, and sensors report any defects. The sphere is brought up to pressure to test it for leaks, and cable lead-throughs are tested using helium.
Maintenance workers are protected from radiation, and they practice in a simulator before carrying out maintenance work.
