Borssele nuclear power plant was built on the basis of a simple, safe, robust design from the early 1960s. It is a pressurised water reactor with a high level of safety.
This animation clearly explains the nuclear fission process. The reactor power is regulated by control rods.
The nuclear (primary) system is explained in this section. The production process is explained using diagrams and an animation.
The radioactivity at the plant is sequestered behind five hermetically sealed barriers. In the event of a nuclear accident, radioactive substances are kept inside the dome (containment), where the air is underpressurised, to exclude the possibility of a hydrogen explosion.
Explanation of the cooling systems (emergency) and emergency power generation, and emergency operation from the auxiliary shutdown control room.
Overview of features that make the plant resistant to extreme external events.
Overview of latest safety investments.
